Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I’d love a career where I can work with people, be my own boss and do something I genuinely enjoy?”
Perhaps you already work within health, beauty or wellbeing and are looking to add another professional skill. Or maybe you are considering a complete career change and have no previous experience in the industry at all.
Colonic hydrotherapy training could open the door to a completely new career.
I’m Erica Hartley, an Advanced Colonic Hydrotherapist, RICTAT-verified trainer, and Vice Chair and Board Member of the RICTAT Colonic Association. I have over 14 years of clinical experience and have trained many students over the years, helping them progress from those first nervous days of learning to becoming qualified therapists and setting up their own clinics.
So, how do you know whether becoming a colonic hydrotherapist could be right for you?
Here are 10 signs to consider.
1. You Have a Genuine Interest in Gut Health
Perhaps you’re the person who is always talking about digestion, nutrition, bowel health and wellbeing.
A fascination with how the body works is a fantastic starting point. During professional colonic hydrotherapy training, you will develop a much deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology, the digestive system, contraindications, client assessment and safe practice.
You don’t need to know everything before you begin — that’s what training is for.
2. You Enjoy Helping People
For me, this is one of the biggest qualities a colonic hydrotherapist can have.
People come through our clinic doors for many different reasons, and some may feel nervous or embarrassed about discussing their bowel habits.
Being approachable, professional and able to put somebody at ease is incredibly important.
Sometimes being a great therapist is as much about listening and communicating as it is about performing the treatment.
3. You Want a Career That Isn’t Your Typical 9–5
One of the attractions of becoming a qualified colonic hydrotherapist is the potential to shape your working life around your circumstances.
Some therapists choose to work full-time, while others build their colonic practice alongside another job or existing therapy business.
If your long-term goal is to run your own clinic, training can give you a route towards creating a business that works for you.
Of course, self-employment requires commitment, planning and marketing — simply qualifying doesn’t guarantee a successful business — which is why I believe students need support with the business side too.
4. You’re Considering a Career Change
I speak to people from all sorts of backgrounds who are interested in training to become a colonic hydrotherapist.
You don’t necessarily need to already work in healthcare. RICTAT states that people without the required Anatomy & Physiology qualification can complete the relevant access training before progressing.
So don’t automatically assume:
“I haven’t worked in health before, so I couldn’t do it.”
There may be a route available to you.
5. You’d Love to Run Your Own Clinic
This is where it gets exciting.
I have watched students progress from learning the basics of colonic hydrotherapy to planning treatment rooms, researching equipment, building websites and welcoming their first clients.
Your training should prepare you for more than simply carrying out a treatment.
My Colonic Hydrotherapy Training in Sheffield includes learning around business and marketing, clinic and equipment setup, client care and professional practice alongside the clinical elements of the qualification.
I want my students thinking about the bigger picture:
What happens after I qualify?
6. You Prefer Hands-On Learning
You can learn a great deal online, but becoming confident with colonic hydrotherapy requires real practical experience.
My training programme combines online learning and live theory sessions with seven days of in-person practical training in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Students undertake at least 15 supervised colonic hydrotherapy treatments as part of their practical training.
This is where knowledge begins to turn into confidence.
You are working with real people, learning client communication, treatment techniques, hygiene protocols, equipment setup and how to adapt professionally to different situations.
7. You’re Comfortable Talking About Poo!
Yes, really!
If the thought of discussing bowel movements makes you want to run out of the room, this might not be the career for you.
As colonic hydrotherapists, conversations about constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, wind, bowel habits and poo are completely normal.
Your clients need to know they can talk openly without embarrassment or judgement.
There really isn’t much that shocks us!
8. You Want Proper Professional Training
If you’re going to invest in a new career, look carefully at who is training you and what qualification you’re working towards.
My training is recognised through RICTAT, whose current programme incorporates theory, practical clinical training, supervised treatments and final assessment. RICTAT also states that its training works to National Occupational Standards.
I’m proud to be a RICTAT-verified Colonic Hydrotherapy Trainer, as well as serving as Vice Chair and a Board Member of the association.
Professional standards matter enormously in this industry.
9. You Want Support After You Qualify
I don’t believe the relationship between trainer and student should suddenly end when the certificate is handed over.
In many ways, that’s when the next stage begins.
You may suddenly have questions about your clinic, equipment, clients, marketing or simply need reassurance as you find your feet.
Ongoing mentoring and post-qualification support form part of the RICTAT training approach, and supporting my own students as they develop their careers is something I am passionate about.
I’ve trained many students over the years, and seeing them establish themselves as therapists is one of the most rewarding parts of being a trainer.
10. You’re Ready to Invest in Yourself
Starting a new career is a big decision.
It takes time, study, practical training and financial investment.
But if you’ve been thinking for months — or even years — that you’d like to do something different, perhaps it’s time to find out what’s involved rather than continuing to wonder.
You don’t need to have your entire future clinic planned before you enquire.
Every therapist starts as a student.
