What Makes a Great Colonic Hydrotherapist?

By Erica Hartley

Colonic Training UK
Vice Chair & Board Member of

As a RICTAT Qualified Trainer and Vice Chair of the Association, I have spent many years training therapists to enter this profession with confidence, competence and clinical integrity.

Over the years, I have trained many successful students — and I have seen first-hand what separates someone who simply completes a qualification from someone who becomes a truly exceptional colonic hydrotherapist.

Here is what makes the difference.

1️⃣ Strong Foundations in Anatomy & Physiology

A great therapist understands far more than how to operate equipment.

They understand:

  • The structure and function of the digestive system
  • Contraindications and red flag symptoms
  • The importance of safe practice
  • When referral to a GP or healthcare professional is required
  • The connection between gut health and overall wellbeing

Quality training builds clinical confidence — and confidence protects clients.

2️⃣ Recognised Professional Standards

Being a Qualified Trainer with RICTAT is something I take very seriously. Professional recognition matters.

A great colonic hydrotherapist:

  • Holds recognised certification
  • Maintains insurance
  • Gains informed consent
  • Keeps thorough client records
  • Adheres to strict hygiene protocols
  • Works within clear professional boundaries

Standards protect both practitioner and client — and uphold the reputation of our industry.

3️⃣ The Ability to Hold Safe Space

Colonic hydrotherapy is a deeply personal treatment. Clients may feel vulnerable or anxious.

An exceptional therapist:

  • Communicates clearly and calmly
  • Maintains dignity at all times
  • Demonstrates emotional awareness
  • Respects boundaries
  • Creates a safe, non-judgemental environment

Technical skill alone is not enough. Presence and professionalism build trust.

4️⃣ Commitment to Ongoing CPD

Qualification is the beginning — not the end.

The best therapists continue their professional development, expanding their knowledge and refining their practice. This ensures:

  • Updated knowledge
  • Increased clinical confidence
  • Ethical, modern practice
  • Continued professional growth

As Vice Chair and Board Member of RICTAT, raising standards through education remains central to my work.

5️⃣ Proper Hands-On Training & Mentorship

Over the years, I have trained many students who now run successful clinics.

The therapists who truly thrive:

  • Value supervised practical training
  • Seek mentorship
  • Ask questions
  • Respect the responsibility of the role

Hands-on training creates real-world competence — not just theory.

6️⃣ Integrity & Ethical Communication

A great colonic hydrotherapist does not make exaggerated claims.

They educate responsibly.
They work collaboratively.
They prioritise client wellbeing above all else.

Integrity builds long-term reputation.
